DoD Combatant Command Cloud Migration

Customer Challenges

This Department of Defense (DoD) customer needed to create a Program Management Office (PMO) focused on cloud computing initiatives to take advantage of the capabilities that cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) provide. This cloud PMO had to enable a Platform as a Service offering for internal technical teams backed by AWS to manage all cloud services throughout the enterprise. This  provides a foundational level of security, compliance, and visibility to facilitate cloud migration activities. This project posed the following challenges:

  • Implement a base infrastructure that adheres to all customer security policies as a landing platform for migrated projects into AWS.
  • Attain an Authority to Operate (ATO) for the infrastructure.
  • Build infrastructure elements across three distinct fabrics – GovCloud, AWS Secret , and AWS Top Secret Regions.
  • Support a multi-tenancy model for cloud consumption to provide isolation and allow for different use cases across the cloud.
  • Integrate with other corporate services and capabilities to take advantage of existing toolsets and security mechanisms.
  • Assist the customer with cloud migration activities – moving projects from virtualized infrastructure into AWS infrastructure.

The Applied Insight Solution

Applied Insight implemented our Altitude infrastructure platform solution to meet all identified DoD challenges and requirements to establish a cloud PMO as an effective, secure, and compliant cloud migration landing platform. We tailored this Altitude implementation to fit the unique needs of the DoD customer, ensuring we satisfied all continually developing requirements. Currently, Altitude has been established in GovCloud as the de facto unclassified cloud-based environment for our customer’s entire organization, with ongoing efforts to continue deployments in the AWS Secret Region and AWS Top Secret Region. We leveraged the services, features, and tools aligned with AWS and industry best practices to create a secure, cloud-based environment built on a highly available and scalable infrastructure. Altitude is the landing platform to host all successfully migrated user workloads and allows for controlled access to AWS services within any ATO system.

Successful Results

The Applied Insight implementation of our proprietary AltitudeTM within AWS established the PMO and successfully passed accreditation to become fully operational. This implementation included all traditional elements of an Altitude solution, such as customized workflows, software, and automation tailored to meet the specific needs of the DoD’s end-users. Applied Insight’s engineering teams leveraged the company’s proven cloud migration processes to begin digital modernization activities with customer workloads – with Altitude being the landing platform hosting all migrated workloads. The elements of the environment we implemented and are currently managing are:

  • End User Access
  • Infrastructure Services
  • Shared Services
  • Cloud Governance
  • Networking
  • Security Services
  • Logging / Auditing
